Becoming A REALTOR®

Not everyone that sells real estate is a REALTOR®. A REALTOR® is an individual who holds either an Appraiser's, Valuation Specialist's, Salesperson's, Associate Broker's, or Broker's License and is a Member of the Local Association, such as the Greater Lansing Association of REALTORS® (GLAR). When you join your Local Association as a REALTOR®, you also become a Member of the State and National Association of REALTORS®.
The first step in becoming a REALTOR® is deciding what type of license you want to pursue and whether you plan on working with a firm or opening your own business. The Department of Labor and Economic Growth can advise you on the requirements necessary for each license and where the educational courses are taught, as well as the fees involved. To sell or appraise real estate, after you obtain your license, you do not have to become a Member of the Greater Lansing Association of REALTORS®. However, as a Member, you have access to our Multiple Listing Service and the cooperation of 1,300 plus REALTORS® who list and sell over 11,000 properties each year.
Once you have obtained your license or taken the test and made the decision as to whether you will be operating on your own or through a Member Firm, you are ready to apply for Membership. You need not have received your license to make application. Final approval will be subject to the receipt of your license. There are various forms of Membership:

Designated REALTOR® Membership If you are opening your own firm or will be the responsible Broker of a firm, this is the form of Membership you would need to pursue. The process takes approximately 4 to 6 weeks and no services are available until the approval process is completed.

Secondary Designated REALTOR® Membership This form of Membership is the same as Designated REALTOR® Membership except that the REALTOR® is holding primary Membership at another REALTOR® Association/Board through which National and State dues are being paid.

REALTOR® This form of Membership is geared toward individuals who have associated their license with a Member firm. Once you make application to GLAR, your services begin immediately. However, until you complete the approval process your Membership Status will be a Salesperson. Once the approval process is completed, your Membership Status will be changed to REALTOR®.

Secondary REALTOR® This form of Membership is the same as REALTOR® Membership except that the REALTOR® is holding primary Membership at another REALTOR® Association/Board through which they are paying National and State dues.
